JOUR1111 Lecture 1 - So you want to be a Journalist?
What is it that makes Journalism so attractive as both a hobby and a career? Is it the power that comes with the job? The reality that many of the public's opinion and influence are formed and shaped by your words and your written thoughts? Or is it the responsibility of first finding the truth and then presenting it in an unbiased and objective manner in order to allow the general public to form their own ideas and opinions?
Whatever the reason(s) may be, there is little doubt as to the appeal Journalism holds for much of the population. This first lecture of JOUR1111 did not fail to highlight both the importance of Journalism in today's society and the position of power and responsibility that Journalist's hold and in my opinion, further enticed the students to really think about the skills and expertises required to be a good reporter.
However in order to further broaden my horizons on the topic I decided to do a little bit of my own digging into the appeal behind Journalism and what it means to be a Journalist, this are some of my favourite quotes of which found.
“Journalism allows its readers to witness history; fiction gives its readers an opportunity to live it.”
- John Hersey
"I know of no human being who has a better time than an eager and energetic young reporter."
- H.L. Mencken.
“Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.”
- Henry Anatole Grunwald
For me, Journalism is not only about reporting issues and seeking the truth on certain matters, it is about creating history through the telling of stories and through the words and actions of the present. A Journalist holds a unique position of both power and responsibility and must therefore find the correct balance between a good story and what can otherwise be considered as tabloid fodder.
